Health Day

We enjoyed a great day earlier this week when members of the Healthy Living team visited us. The children participated in a wide range of healthy living workshops and had assemblies based on the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It was good to see that the children were horrified by the high sugar content of some of the drinks that they have. Our message to the children is to be aware of how much sugar there is in some drinks and foods and have them as a treat, rather than as routine. It was lovely to see parents and families visiting school to see what was going on.

Football!

Our girls team were in action again this week at the Calderdale finals. They all played really well and had a great time. They were unlucky against great opposition and went out of the competition at the group stage. Well done to the whole team!

The Gardening club would like to send a massive thank you to GS Joinery for the donation of a new polytunnel for use in school.

FOOTBALL MATCHES

Lightcliffe Academy have invited us to enter two Year 5/6 football teams into a league this term. Our ‘B’ team had their first games last Friday afternoon, both of which were won 2-1. Hopefully the ‘A’ team will be able to match that record next week.

Upcoming fixtures see the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams face each other in what is destined to be a competitive fixture. Thank you to those family members who came along to support the boys.

Fancy the ‘Fun’ but not the ‘Run’?

There’ll be a fantastic Summer Fayre with food, drink, stalls, fun and games for all the family! Money raised from the Burner, its stalls and raffles will raise funds for the participating schools’ PTFAs.

SCARECROW FESTIVAL

Thank you to John Marshall & Sarah Priestley (who volunteer in school weekly), for all their hard work in producing our school scarecrows for the village scarecrow event this weekend. Based on the theme of healthy eating, the kitchen staff and children look amazing.

Hanging baskets for sale

The gardening club are busy preparing hanging baskets again this year and want to make the baskets available to parents prior to any remaining baskets being sold at the Summer fayre on the 12th June.

The baskets are 14” in size and hopefully will be as successful as last year, priced at £10.00 each we anticipate the baskets to be ready for collection on the 23rd May or 6th June, (we can also arrange local delivery).

Chicks!

There has been great excitement in Year 2 and Reception this week with the arrival of eggs and subsequent hatching of our chicks. A live webcam has been established. You can follow a link from our twitter feed or sign up using this link http://livestream.com/accounts/19119126/events/5282303

The children are thrilled and I am told that many parents are enjoying observing the rapid growth of the chicks. It has been lovely to see that children from across school have been visiting the new arrivals.

Safeguarding Children

At Northowram School, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and we expect all members of the school community to share this commitment. Our school actively promotes fundamental British values. This commitment includes staff, governors, volunteers and contractors working on the school site.

We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment and these can be found on our website.

Sometimes we need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about pupils are discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that this would be contrary to the child’s welfare.

We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalisation and extremism.

Jane Jennings is our Designated Safeguarding Lead. She is the lead person in our school and the person to contact if you have concerns about a child. Mrs Scardifield and Mr Lomas are also Designated Safeguarding Leads. Canon James Allison is our Safeguarding Governor.

MOVING HOUSE,CHANGING TELEPHONE NUMBERS or EMAIL ADDRESS

If you are moving house, changing your telephone numbers or your email address please can you inform school as soon as possible to ensure we have the most up to date information.

Parents registered on ParentMail must also update their information on the system directly.

If you have any queries or problems please do not hesitate to contact school.

REPORTING ABSENCE

If your child is absent from school please ensure that you either telephone school as soon as possible each day of the absence or report the absence on the new ParentMail app. It is important that you give the nature of absence e.g. Sore throat, flu, etc. This enables us to monitor the absences properly.

PTFA Update

Hello All

We move ever closer to the Burner and our Summer Fayre plans are well under way. The Burner committee are looking for businesses who wish to advertise in the programme. The prices are £15 for a 1/4 page advert or £25 for a 1/2 page advert. Please get in touch if you know someone who would be interested!

Applications are now open for those wishing to run the Burner, you can sign up online at www.runtheburner.co.uk

We will need volunteers on the day of the Burner to help us run our Fayre and activities. If you are able to spare an hour or two please get in touch. You do not need to be a member of the PTFA to help out, any support would be very much appreciated. If you want to be part of the team organising the Summer Fayre then you would be welcome to join us on Thursday 5th May, 7.30pm at the Shoulder of Mutton.
