R.E. Visits

Last week both Year 6 classes visited the Gurdwara Singh Sabha temple in Bradford. We have been learning about the Sikh faith as part of our R.E. curriculum, so we were delighted to be able to spend some time in a Gurdwara and meet our guide Narinder.

Narinder showed us around and answered all of our questions. He also gave us an opportunity to sit quietly in their prayer hall and listen to some of the words from the Guru Granth Sahib being sung.

We were then able to look at and handle some Sikh symbols, also have a peek in the Guru’s bedroom. We were fascinated and thoroughly enjoyed our trip.

Message from Reception Team

Please remind your child not to play on the climbing frame/slide by the Reception classrooms before or after school.

Reception and Year 2 have some living eggs which we hope will hatch into chicks this week. If anyone is interested in giving the chicks a home they will be ready to collect on Thursday 16th February. Please come and see one of the class teachers.

Thanks

Caroline Annetts

EYFS Lead and Reception Teacher

Sainsbury’s Active Kids

Well done everyone and Thank You for collecting Sainbury’s Active Kids vouchers. We have collected 373 so far!

The more we get the more playground equipment we can order so keep collecting. We really appreciate it.

SchoolMeals Ordering System

We are currently reviewing the way the children order school meals and we are looking to implement an online ordering system. This will help to ensure that all children receive the meal of their choice and support the kitchen in ordering supplies.

We are looking to maintain the current dinner patterns as part of the system, the choices being:

  1. Dinners every day
  2. Dinners on a Monday only
  3. Dinners on a Friday only
  4. Dinners on a Monday and Friday
  5. Packed lunch every day

The kitchen are currently working on a 3 week menu where the children will be able to choose from 3 main meals and 2 puddings and this menu will remain the same for the whole term.

Parents will be required to order via the online system on ParentMail forms with their children to ensure the children like and will enjoy their meal choice each day.

We are hoping to introduce the system at the start of the Summer term (after the Easter holidays) and this will mean that the children will choose during February/ early March to allow us collate the orders and the kitchen to prepare the food orders with the suppliers.

We are hoping this will be a positive change to our meal ordering and will reduce the amount of time the teachers have to take out of learning time each morning to order the meals with the children.

School Attendance and Punctuality

We are working on decreasing lateness and unauthorised absence and we are going to be closely monitoring all absence, punctuality and term time holidays. Please see below the current statistics that relate to this half term. As part of this process we will be contacting parents via telephone and letters to discuss persistent punctuality issues. Everyone is late at some point, but too many are habitually late for school.

1483 Number of minutes lost due to late arrival at school (30th January — 10th February)

This is the equivalent of 4.5 lost school days in the last 2 weeks

48 Children arrived late during this period

Term time holidays

2 Pupils have taken term time holidays since 30th January – 4 school sessions have been lost due to
holidays

Unauthorised absences

5 Pupils have taken unauthorised absence sessions totalling 6 (between 30th January — 10th February) this is where no reason has been given for a child not being at school.

Whole school attendance from 30th January — 10th February 96.2%

Thanks to everyone who is consistently on time and attending all of the time.

Reporting Absence

If your child is absent from school please ensure that you either telephone school as soon as possible each day of the absence or report the absence on the new ParentMail app. It is important that you give the nature of absence e.g. Sore throat, flu, etc. This enables us to monitor the absences properly.

Appointments

Please can parents where possible ensure that any routine appointments for the dentist, doctor and optician are made for out of school hours. If appointments are required during school time please can you inform the school office rather than the class teacher, as soon as possible.

Playtime Snacks

Children are allowed to buy fruit and water from the trolley at school. If they bring a snack from home it needs to be fruit or veg. Any drink brought from home to consume during the day (not lunchtime) needs to be water or milk only. Thank you for your support with this.

Mobile Phones in School

Is it really necessary for your child to bring their mobile phone to school? We are getting more and more children in KS2 bringing phones into school which have to be handed into the office each morning and locked in a cupboard until the end of the day. Sometimes children do not come and collect their phones and school cannot take responsibility for any loss or damage to them. If you would like your child to bring their mobile phone to school please can you send a letter into school giving the reasons. All phones to have a sticker with your child’s name and class to ensure they are returned to the correct child at the end of the school day.

Moving House, Changing Telephone Numbers or Email Address

If you are moving house, changing your telephone numbers or your email address please can you inform school as soon as possible to ensure we have the most up to date information.

Parents registered on ParentMail must also update their information on the system directly.

If you have any queries or problems please do not hesitate to contact school.

Safeguarding Children

At Northowram School, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and we expect all members of the school community to share this commitment. Our school actively promotes fundamental British values. This commitment includes staff, governors, volunteers and contractors working on the school site.

We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment and these can be found on our website.

Sometimes we need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about pupils are discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that this would be contrary to the child’s welfare.

We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalisation and extremism.

Jane Jennings is our Designated Safeguarding Lead. She is the lead person in our school and the person to contact if you have concerns about a child. Mrs Scardifield and Mr Lomas are also Designated Safeguarding Leads. Canon James Allison is our Safeguarding Governor.

School Meals Patterns

Please can parents note the options for school meals patterns are:

  • All week
  • Monday only
  • Friday only
  • Monday and Friday

These are the only options available. If your child no longer would like to be on school dinners please note we require one week’s notice of changing to a packed lunch.

If you are paying by +Pay there is just one amount for next term, £63.00 (February—April). You can reduce this to any amount you would like to pay. If you have a query in regards to dinner monies please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
