Well Done to Year 6

The Year 6 pupils have been working very hard this week on their statutory tests which in some way marks the culmination of their primary school time. The way in which the children have conducted themselves and the effort that they have put in has been excellent. We hope for some good results. Well done to all of them.

Head’s Secondment

I am currently working for one day a week (Friday) at Leeds Beckett University as a Consultant for Carnegie School of Education. For the duration of this term, Mrs Scardifield will act as Headteacher on Fridays.

Poetry Competition Results

Congratulations to all those of you who entered the house poetry competition. The standard was very high and Mrs Pearson and I found it very difficult to pick winners. After much pondering we chose:

First

Nature by Daisy Whelan
The Snowy Night by Tegan Green-Moore

Second

School by Phoebe Johnstone and Scarlet Garland
Cats by Freddie Roe

Third

Volcano by Roisin Beckwith
The Grand Soiree by Tegan Green-Moore
We also felt Grace Armitage and Grace Boshell deserved a special mention for their
limericks.
Well done everyone and we are looking forward to seeing these poems performed in the
Grand Soiree.

PTFA Update

This year’s Summer Fayre/Burner is fast approaching and as always we rely on parental support to make the event a success. The Fayre will be on Sunday 11th June and we have lots of great activities and stalls planned. We would appreciate your help with the following:

CHOCOLATE TOMBOLA: we will be holding a non uniform day on Friday 26th May to collect sweets/chocolates for this tombola.

HOME BAKING STALL: Any donations of home baking for the stall and for runners of the 10k would be greatly received.

TEDDY TOMBOLA: the ever popular teddy tombola will be returning again this year. We shall be collecting your unwanted teddies closer to the event date.

JAR TOMBOLA: once again the children will be invited to bring in filled jars in exchange for house points. Please send in as many jars as you can because this is always a very popular stall! (full details will be sent via Parentmail).

VOLUNTEERS FOR STALLS: Thank you to everyone who has offered support so far. We still need lots more volunteers. If you can spare a few hours to help man the stalls on the day or help with setting and clearing up, please comment below or direct message us. Full details of all collections and their dates will be sent via Parentmail in due course.

School Attendance and Punctuality

We are working on decreasing lateness and unauthorised absence and we are going to be closely monitoring all absence, punctuality and term time holidays. Please see below the current statistics that relate to this half term. As part of this process we will be contacting parents via telephone and letters to discuss persistent punctuality issues. Everyone is late at some point, but too many are habitually late for school.
1264 Number of minutes lost due to late arrival at school (2nd – 12th May)
This is the equivalent of 3.83 lost school days in the last 2 weeks
57 Children arrived late during this period

Term time holidays

14 Pupils have taken term time holidays since 2nd May – 67 school sessions have been lost due to holidays.

Unauthorised absences

2 Pupils have taken unauthorised absence sessions totalling 3 (between 2nd—12th May) this is where no reason has been given for a child not being at school.
Whole school attendance from 2nd —11th May 96.03%
Thanks to everyone who is consistently on time and attending all of the time.

Reporting Absence

If your child is absent from school please ensure that you either telephone school as
soon as possible each day of the absence or report the absence on the new ParentMail
app. It is important that you give the nature of absence e.g. Sore throat, flu, etc. This
enables us to monitor the absences properly.

Appointments

Please can parents where possible ensure that any routine appointments for the dentist,
doctor and optician are made for out of school hours. If appointments are required
during school time please can you inform the school office rather than the class teacher,
as soon as possible.

Safeguarding Children

At Northowram School, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and we expect all members of the school community to share this commitment. Our school actively promotes fundamental British values. This commitment includes staff, governors, volunteers and contractors working on the school site.

We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment and these can be found on our website. Sometimes we need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about pupils are discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that this would be contrary to the child’s welfare.

We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalisation and extremism.

Jane Jennings is our Designated Safeguarding Lead. She is the lead person in our school and the person to contact if you have concerns about a child. Mrs Scardifield and Mr Lomas are also Designated Safeguarding Leads. Canon James Allison is our Safeguarding Governor.

Playtime Snacks

Thank you to everyone who has brought healthy fruit or vegetables for playtime, it is
great to have your support with this initiative.

Mobile Phones in School

Is it really necessary for your child to bring their mobile phone to school? We are getting more and more children in KS2 bringing phones into school which have to be handed into the office each morning and locked in a cupboard until the end of the day. Sometimes children do not come and collect their phones and school cannot take responsibility for any loss or damage to them. If you would like your child to bring their mobile phone to school please can you send a letter into school giving the reasons. All phones to have a sticker with your child’s name and class to ensure they are returned to the correct child at the end of the school day.

Moving House, Changing Telephone Numbers or Email Address

If you are moving house, changing your telephone numbers or your email address please can you inform school as soon as possible to ensure we have the most up to date information.

Parents registered on ParentMail must also update their information on the system directly.

If you have any queries or problems please do not hesitate to contact school.
