Open Evening—Tuesday 17 October—3.30-5.30pm

We hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join us with your children on our Open Evening after school next Tuesday. This is a great opportunity for you to spend time in your child’s class and to look at the fabulous work they have produced during these first weeks of the Autumn term. You will also be able to chat with the Class Teacher about how things are progressing. As our first formal parents’ evening of the year is not until after Christmas, this will be a useful time to pop in and find out about your child’s learning—the children will be very excited to share their workbooks with you! There are no appointments necessary at this drop-in event so please just call in at pick up time or come along later—we look forward to seeing you there!

Please remember that if you have any concerns about your child’s progress or well-being at school, you can contact the Class Teacher by phone or email at any point.

School improvements

As usual, school has been a very busy place during the Summer and in these first few weeks of the Autumn term. You might no ce that the following have occurred:

  • The fencing around the Reception outdoor area has been extended to give them more space.
  • The Year 5 classrooms have been decorated and lockers installed—this will be done in other classes on a rolling programme.
  • More efficient lighting has been installed in classrooms.
  • It’s great also to see all of the classrooms looking tidy and smart.

Five to nine is learning time!

We expect pupils to be ready to come into classrooms at 8:55am to begin work. Doors to all classrooms will now be opened a little earlier than this to allow children to come into the classrooms, sort out bags and coats and be ready to learn at five to nine. Doors to classrooms will be closed at 8.55am and if your child arrives after this point, they will be marked late. Every minute of learning time counts.

New £1 coin

With effect from Monday 16 October, Northowram Primary School will no longer be able to accept the old pound coin.

Please can you check any cash payments and ensure that only new pound coins are sent into school, i.e. the new 12-sided version. Thank you.

Names in clothing

There was a huge pile of lost property at the end of last year. We can easily return lost items with names in so we ask that you please take the time to name your childrens’ belongings. Our PTFA are looking into an online ordering system for name tags which will raise money for school. If all else fails, please write on the labels.

Book fair

The Book Fair arrived in school on Thursday 21 September. We sold books to the total of £288.93, which resulted in commission of £75.57 for the school. We will be purchasing Spelling Dictionaries for the school with this amount. Thank you to everyone who attended the book fair.

Assembly theme—keeping safe at home and school

Over the next two weeks, children in Years 1-6 will be discussing and reflecting on how to stay safe. This will include how to keep safe at school, at home and on-line. As part of this, we will look at keeping safe whilst playing out as we have regular reports drawn to our attention of children cycling and scooting without helmets, often in a dangerous fashion, on or near roads in the village. If your older children play out unsupervised, please check that they have the road sense to keep safe and support us in our message that cycle helmets save lives! Many thanks.

Please Park Considerately!

Parking is at a premium at drop-off or pick-up time.

Please consider the safety of our children and the local residents when you park at these times. We continue to work with the local council and police to ensure that we keep our children as safe as possible at these busy times. Please think carefully about the safety of your parking—it really could cost a child’s life. Many thanks to all our careful and considerate families including many who make the sensible decision to walk to and from school!

Moving house, changing telephone numbers or email address

If you are moving house, changing your telephone numbers or your email address please can you inform school as soon as possible to ensure we have the most up to date information.

Parents registered on ParentMail must also update their information on the system directly.

If you have any queries or problems please do not hesitate to contact school.

Cross Country

A big ‘well done’ to all the Year 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s that represented school in very wet conditions at Lightcliffe Academy on 11 October. We’ve had the best overall results that we’ve had in a long time and there were some super individual performances that will qualify for the Calderdale Schools Finals later on in the year. Child line

At Northowram School, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and we expect all members of the school community to share this commitment. Our school actively promotes fundamental British values. This commitment includes staff, governors, volunteers and contractors working on the school site.

We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment and these can be found on our website.

Sometimes we need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about pupils are discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that this would be contrary to the child’s welfare.

We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalisation and extremism.

Jane Jennings is our Designated Safeguarding Lead. She is the lead person in our school and the person to contact if you have concerns about a child. Mrs Scardifield and Mr Lomas are also Designated Safeguarding Leads. Canon James Allison is our Safeguarding Governor.
