Open Evening—Tuesday 17 October

It was great to see the healthy turnout for the recent open evenings that we held. You will be invited into school again in January to hear and discuss a more detailed and precise account of progress in learning. Please remember that at any point you are welcome to meet with Class Teachers to discuss the work and progress of your child. You certainly don’t have to wait.

Thank you all for your support with the new homework arrangements. Certainly the homework across school is now more in line with class work and also the level of expectation at the end of the year for each year group. Another impact of the change is that pupils are reliably completing homework each week. May I also draw to your attention to the fact that for many pupils the homework is challenging and if there are any issues, we can help in school.

Saturday 11th November

On Saturday 11 November the annual gathering at Northowram War Memorial will take place. Unlike recent years, this is taking place at a weekend so families and children are all welcome to join with the short service (We usually select a class). School uniform is not necessary. It would be great to see people there – please arrange to be there at 10.50am.

Poppies will be on sale in school from Friday 27 October.

Anglo Saxon Day

Year 4 enjoyed an Anglo Saxon Day in school.

An Anglo Saxon came in to speak to the children about Anglo Saxon life. She talked about jobs, food, clothes and weapons. Some of us dressed up in Anglo Saxon clothing. We got to make a shield wall and learnt about different battle tactics. Some people got to dress up as an Anglo Saxon warrior with chainmail, a shield and various weapons.

New £1 coin

Please ensure that you do not send any old style one pound coins into school. We are no longer able to accept these.

Please can you check any cash payments and ensure that only new pound coins are sent into school, i.e. the new 12-sided version. Thank you.

PTFA Disco

The PTFA Disco was a brilliant success with volunteers, staff and pupils enjoying a great night. It has to be said that the children’s behaviour was amazing with everyone getting along really well with each other and socialising beautifully. It was a pleasure to be there. Thank you to everyone for their involvement.

Bonfire Night

This week in Reception we have been talking about Bonfire Night and how to keep safe. We have mixed our own paint and created firework patterns outside. It was very messy but so much fun!

No dogs allowed

Dogs are not permitted on the school grounds. Please support us with this by leaving your dog at home or at the gates.

Please Park Considerately!

Parking is at a premium at drop-off or pick-up time.

Please consider the safety of our children and the local residents when you park at these times. We continue to work with the local council and police to ensure that we keep our children as safe as possible at these busy times. Please think carefully about the safety of your parking – it really could cost a child’s life.

Many thanks to all our careful and considerate families including many who make the sensible decision to walk to and from school!

Moving house, changing telephone numbers or email address

If you are moving house, changing your telephone numbers or your email address please can you inform school as soon as possible to ensure we have the most up to date information.

Parents registered on ParentMail must also update their information on the system directly. If you have any queries or problems please do not hesitate to contact school.

Childline

At Northowram School, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and we expect all members of the school community to share this commitment. Our school actively promotes fundamental British values. This commitment includes staff, governors, volunteers and contractors working on the school site.

We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment and these can be found on our website.

Sometimes we need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about pupils are discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that this would be contrary to the child’s welfare.

We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalisation and extremism.

Jane Jennings is our Designated Safeguarding Lead. She is the lead person in our school and the person to contact if you have concerns about a child. Mrs Scardifield and Mr Lomas are also Designated Safeguarding Leads. Canon James Allison is our Safeguarding Governor.
