November 25, 2016

What a busy week again at Northowram Primary School! We had our really successful Farmer’s market last night which was superbly organised by Sarah Rushforth. Our appreciation goes out
to Sarah.

It seems really early to be saying this, but due to the fairly early finish for Christmas, we will see the Christmas festivities starting at the end of next week with just three weeks of term left.

This week we say a temporary goodbye to Miss Nichols, who commences her maternity leave. Best wishes to her from all at Northowram Primary School.

We say goodbye to Mrs Crossley who is leaving us next week. I am sure that you will join me in wishing her all the best in her new role.

A big thank you to everyone, we raised £301.33 for Children in Need last Friday. Harry Byrnes in Year 4 sold biscuits which raised £42.65.

ANTI BULLYING WEEK 28th November-2nd December 2016

Next week we will be supporting the anti-bullying campaign promoted by the Anti-bullying Alliance. We will be talking to the children about what bullying is and how we can tackle it. Everyone at Northowram Primary School should feel happy and safe in the knowledge that bullying is unacceptable in our school.

Farmers Market

Thank you so much to everyone who supported our 2016 Farmers’ Market, please watch out for another note which will be sent next week to tell you how much we have raised and some other important information. The raffle will be drawn today, we will announce the winning numbers on the Farmers’ Market Facebook and Twitter pages today and also send in the note next week.

We are so proud of how everyone in our Northowram family helped to make this a success. Please look at some of the amazing items children helped to make.

Congratulations to Ava Gardiner, Scarlet Garland and Amelia Waites who have been really busy raising funds for Macmillan Nurses. They organised two competitions Guess the name of the Teddy and Guess the number of sweets in the Jar. As a result they are sending £20.10 to Macmillan. Well done!!

Well done Lillie Hall for guessing there were 137 sweets in the jar, don’t eat them all at once!

Well done Lola Pearson for guessing that the teddy was called Colin, remember to cuddle him lots.

5 Willow RE trip to the Mosque

On Wednesday 16th November Year 5 Willow visited the Madnia Jamia Masjid in Bradford as part of the R.E. curriculum. They were met and shown around the mosque by Mr Saleem who made them all feel very welcome. He encouraged the children to ask lots of questions which after a slow start they did. The children were all very impressed by the size of the prayer hall and the way it made them feel very quiet and calm. They were surprised by how little decoration there was inside but how soft and clean the carpet was. They soon understood how this would help a Muslim to focus on their prayer.

We are working on decreasing lateness and unauthorised absence and we are going to be closely monitoring all absence, punctuality and term time holidays. Please see below the current statistics that relate to this half term. As part of this process we will be contacting parents via telephone and letters to discuss persistent punctuality issues. Everyone is late at some point, but too many are habitually late for school.

2368 Number of minutes lost due to late arrival at school (14th November — 25th November)

This is the equivalent of 7.2 lost school days in a 2 weeks

76 Children arrived late during this period

Term time holidays

2 Pupils have taken term time holidays since 14th November – 19 school sessions have been lost due to holidays

Unauthorised absences

10 Pupils have taken unauthorised absence sessions totally 26 (between 14th —25th November) this is where no reason has been given for a child not being at school.

Whole school attendance from 14th—24th November 95.60%

Thanks to everyone who is consistently on time and attending all of the time.

If your child is absent from school please ensure that you either telephone school as soon as possible each day of the absence or report the absence on the new ParentMail app. It is important that you give the nature of absence e.g. Sore throat, flu, etc. This enables us to monitor the absences properly.

Please can parents where possible ensure that any routine appointments for the dentist, doctor and optician are made for out of school hours.

We are selling Christmas Beanies again in school in aid of Overgate Hospice—these cost £1.00 each and will be on sale at the main reception before and after school only, from Monday 28th November.

Is it really necessary for your child to bring their mobile phone to school?

We are getting more and more children in KS2 bringing phones into school which have to be handed into the office each morning and locked in a cupboard until the end of the day. Sometimes children do not come and collect their phones and school cannot take responsibility for any loss or damage for them. If you would like your child to bring their mobile phone to school please can you send a letter into school giving the reasons.

If you are moving house, changing your telephone numbers or your email address please can you inform school as soon as possible to ensure we have the most up to date information.

Parents registered on ParentMail must also update their information on the system directly.

If you have any queries or problems please do not hesitate to contact school.

At Northowram School, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and we expect all members of the school community to share this commitment. Our school actively promotes fundamental British values. This commitment includes staff, governors, volunteers and contractors working on the school site.

We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment and these can be found on our website.

Sometimes we need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about pupils are discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that this would be contrary to the child’s welfare.

We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalisation and extremism.

Jane Jennings is our Designated Safeguarding Lead. She is the lead person in our school and the person to contact if you have concerns about a child. Mrs Scardifield and Mr Lomas are also Designated Safeguarding Leads. Canon James Allison is our Safeguarding Governor.

Will your child turn 3 between 1st September 2016 and 31st August 2017? Have you registered your child’s details for our Nursery? Children, for admission to Nursery in September 2017, need to be registered by 31st January 2017. We now offer more flexible sessions which include some full days. If you would like some further information please ring Mrs Jennings on 01422 202704 (ext 517) or email

As Christmas is now only a month away we are sharing information about our Secret Shop – a very popular PTFA event that our children love and hopefully, they buy you something nice for Christmas! Please look out for full details in the Secret Shop letter.

Every year we also ask for donations for our Christmas hampers, full details will also follow in the hamper letters.

If anyone is able to assist with selling raffle tickets at the Christmas concerts please do let myself or Liz Lund know, your assistance would be gratefully received.

Many Thanks.
