Remembrance Day

Many community members joined together to mark Armistice Day last Saturday. Pupils from school placed items of remembrance on the War Memorial and Scarlett Garland read the poem ‘Flanders Field’. She did a wonderful job.

Rotary Club Crocus Bulbs

We would like to thank the Rotary Club for the gift of 500 crocus bulbs that, along with daffodil bulbs, have been planted by Olivia Shaw (Year 5) and Ian Marshall from the school gardening club. Thank you.

Look out for our bulbs flowering around the school sign near the bike store in springtime. They will look lovely

The Rotary in Calderdale – Community Shoebox Appeal 2017

The Rotary Clubs in Calderdale have launched their 2017 shoebox appeal. It will run over the next few weeks leading up to Christmas.
Northowram School is going to participate in this wonderful community appeal that we know will put a smile on so many faces at Christmas time.
We are all fully aware that times are difficult for many in our community and the expectations for some in the run up to Christmas will be bleak. Schools, parents and children can and are therefore helping! Voluntary Action Calderdale (VAC), working with Rotary, has identified many charities, individuals and good causes who will be the end recipients of the filled shoeboxes. Last year 2,000 boxes were given out!

Once filled boxes have been returned, they will be distributed during the week leading up to Christmas to the needier in Calderdale. Those who are given a Christmas shoebox will range from the very young to the older in our community.

There are three possible fillings – toys, toiletries and food. Guidelines as to what might be placed into each is shown on the flap of the flat-pack box. Please though do not put in second-hand toys unless ‘like new’.

The children who help fill the boxes are encouraged to decorate the outsides if they wish to add that extra further smile at Christmas to the individual receiving it.

With regard to the timescale for filling, we need to have the boxes returned to school no later than Friday 8 December to allow for distribution.

Finally, in order to provide continuity in the scheme, Rotary would be delighted if a coin, either 50p or £1 was sellotaped to the circle on the front of the box on its return to school. These will be carefully removed and used to purchase more boxes. Such a contribution though is at everyone’s discretion and is not obligatory.
If you would like to fill a shoebox, please pick one up from the Reception Desk

No dogs allowed

Dogs are not permitted on the school grounds. Please support us with this by leaving your dog at home or at the gates.

Please Park Considerately!

Parking is at a premium at drop-off or pick-up time.

Please consider the safety of our children and the local residents when you park at these times. We continue to work with the local council and police to ensure that we keep our children as safe as possible at these busy times. Please think carefully about the safety of your parking – it really could cost a child’s life.

Many thanks to all our careful and considerate families including many who make the sensible decision to walk to and from school!

At Northowram School, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and we expect all members of the school community to share this commitment. Our school actively promotes fundamental British values. This commitment includes staff, governors, volunteers and contractors working on the school site.

We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment and these can be found on our website.

Sometimes we need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about pupils are discussed with parents/carers first, unless we have reason to believe that this would be contrary to the child’s welfare.

We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalisation and extremism.

Jane Jennings is our Designated Safeguarding Lead. She is the lead person in our school and the person to contact if you have concerns about a child. Mrs Scardifield and Mr Lomas are also Designated Safeguarding Leads. Canon James Allison is our Safeguarding Governor.
