Summer Term Letter

July 10, 2015

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we draw towards the end of another year at Northowram Primary School and have experienced a successful transition day, we are entering a period of exciting change in education. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some of the aspects of school life which we will be developing into the new academic year.

Assessment without Levels

Your child’s report will be the last one to have National Curriculum Levels reported on it. From September, we will be assessing using new criteria and heightened expectations for all pupils, following new government guidelines. Here at Northowram Primary School we are currently developing our approach to this and we will support parents in understanding all the changes that we make. Be assured that the new system will continue to challenge and support all pupils and will provide a clearer picture of your child’s attainment and progress.

Reward and Recognition

We remain committed to celebrating all of our pupils’ achievements in succeeding beyond expectation. We have been working with pupils, parents, staff and governors to prepare a fresh approach to reward and recognition from September which will improve fairness and equality of opportunity for all pupils.

There will be a whole school merit system based on pupils aspiring to achieve different certificates based on reward for good work. In addition we will replace praise assembly with a new weekly event which families will be able to attend. This will be based on every child having the same opportunity to celebrate and share their achievements, whatever they may be. A full information sheet on this will be sent out in September.

Curriculum Development

In line with our continuous drive to provide the best quality curriculum and teaching, we will be piloting subject specialism teaching for subjects, other than Maths and English, in Years 4, 5 and 6.

We will provide you with regular updates on all of these areas, starting with an Open Evening on Wednesday 30th September at 6.00 pm. Please enter this date into your diary.

May I take this opportunity to wish you a good summer and thank you for your continued support.

Yours sincerely,

Daniel Lomas – Headteacher
